Can my marine upholstery be repaired, or do I need to replace it?

It's the first question you're probably asking yourself when you look at your worn-out upholstery. Do I need to replace it all, or can it be repaired?

It starts with determining the extent of the damage or wear to your marine upholstery. Typically, you can repair small scratches, cuts, tears, and burns with a vinyl repair kit. But once those cuts and tears get too large, those kits aren't going to cut it, and you're going to need to replace your marine upholstery.

Are you worried about how it's going to look if you get it repaired instead of replacing it? Don't be. When Recon Pros restores your upholstery, we leave it looking like it's new.

What makes marine upholstery special?

You've done some upholstering with your couch; you can just do the same thing here, right? Wrong. When it comes to marine upholstery, you need to ensure that everything is water-resistant and capable of withstanding the harsh elements while remaining in high-quality working order for years.

But how do you do that? The answer is marine grade vinyl and experience. You can't leave any missed seams or openings, or else you'll expose your marine upholstery to the open water, and it will destroy your seats.

But what is marine grade vinyl? Marine grade vinyl is specially designed for marine use, which means it can handle everything the open water and the elements can throw at it.

Designed to be sun-resistant, marine grade vinyl won't break down like traditional vinyl from UV rays. Don't misunderstand us marine grade vinyl will still break down from UV rays, it just takes longer than other types of vinyl.

But being sun-resistant doesn't just mean that it won't break down as quickly from UV rays, it also helps the color from fading from long term sun exposure. Good thing because there's no hiding your boat from the sun while it's out on the water!

However, you can get your upholstery to last longer with some high-quality boat seat covers. These covers will keep your marine upholstery from breaking down prematurely. At the very least, you should ensure your upholstery is shaded from the sun when docked.

But marine grade vinyl does more than just resist UV rays from the sun, it's also moisture and stain-resistant. It makes sense to be moisture resistant; the spray of the water doesn't just land on you! Being stain-resistant is an added benefit of marine grade vinyl. Since the marine grade vinyl is stain-resistant, it means that the vinyl can hold up to repeated cleanings without wearing out and needing to be repaired or replaced.

All this means that marine grade vinyl can hold up to the elements better than regular upholstery. The tradeoff is the cost. Marine grade vinyl costs more than traditional vinyl, but that's because it offers more features.

Another factor that affects the cost of the vinyl is the thickness of the vinyl. The tradeoffs are pretty straight forward; the thicker the vinyl, the more expensive it is. Additionally, thicker vinyl feels stiffer, and you might not find it as comfortable.

So, why get thicker marine grade vinyl if it's more expensive and less comfortable? Because the thicker the vinyl, the longer it will last. If you want to avoid having to repair or replace your marine upholstery for as long as possible, you want thicker vinyl.

What about boat seat covers?

Despite that fact, that marine grade vinyl is designed to hold up well in the elements; it does still wear out. Boat seat covers will protect your marine upholstery from harmful UV rays and reduce the everyday wear and tear. This means that your upholstery will last longer, and you won't have to worry about your next repair or replacement any time soon!

Or maybe you're just looking to give your boat a whole new look. Replacement boat seat covers can be a great way to overhaul the look of your boat without getting everything reupholstered. And with the ability to add designs and whatever colors you would like boat seat covers give you the ability to give your boat a personalized look while spending a fraction of the cost of getting customized upholstery.

However, there are some things you need to keep in mind when purchasing boat seat covers. First, you need to keep in mind that seat covers aren't going to repair your upholstery or your seats. That means if your seats are extremely damaged, or uncomfortable, replacement boat seat covers aren't going to solve your problem.

And if you're putting boat seat covers over damaged upholstery chances are it's only going to get worse, even if you can't see it. That means if you're getting boat seat covers, you really should repair your marine upholstery before installing them.

If you try to hide it while it still needs repaired chances are, you're going to end up spending more money later when your upholstery needs to be replaced instead of fixed.

But what if your marine upholstery already needs to be replaced? If it's past the point of repairing, why can't you just slap some boat seat covers on it and put it off for another year? The problem is that your upholstery is about more than just looks. It also protects the padding of your seats and keeps them from falling apart.

While a boat seat cover will keep them from being directly exposed to the elements, the everyday wear and tear that comes with using seats will still going to damage your seats if they aren't adequately upholstered. Trying to pinch pennies now can end up costing you a lot more money later.

Why now?

You put up with the small scratches and tears last year, why repair them now? Well, if you fix your vinyl when the cuts and scrapes are small, it might save you some money in the future because you won't have to replace it entirely. That means by trying to save some money now by putting off the necessary repairs you cost yourself even more money down the road.

But what if it's past the point of repairing already? If it already needs replaced why get it reupholstered now? Because once your small tears and scratches turn into big ones you still risk further damage to the seats themselves if you don't get the upholstery replaced.

Your upholstery does more than just offer a stylish look and a comfortable seat. The upholstery keeps the padding of your seat in place and protects it from the elements. Once your padding gets exposed, it's only a matter of time before you need to replace your entire seat instead of just the upholstery.

Trying to save a few bucks now could end up costing you even more money. On top of that, do you want to deal with uncomfortable seating and an unpleasant appearance all summer long?

Or maybe you're trying to sell your boat. Getting it reupholstered or getting the upholstery repaired is a great way to improve the value of your boat without breaking the bank. The investment you put in upfront is going to make you even more money when you sell it.

What are you waiting for? Fix the problems while they're still small and get your boat ready for the summer! We'll have it repaired in no time and have your marine upholstery looking like new for when you take it out on the open water!
